Every brain cell type speaks a different language. We’re learning to read all of them.

Cognition depends on continuous dialogue between neurons and glia. When that dialogue breaks down — during development, across aging, or under the pressure of disease — the failure is rarely uniform. Different cell types fail in different ways, for different reasons, on different timelines.

The Huang Lab dissects those cell-type–specific failures and turns them into therapeutic targets. We build human stem cell–derived neural systems, hybrid human–rodent models, and bioengineered culture platforms that let us interrogate one cell type at a time while preserving the crosstalk that makes the brain a brain. Our work spans Alzheimer’s disease, Angelman syndrome, and autoimmune demyelinating disease — and runs from first mechanism to first-in-class drug candidate.
